This course emphasizes the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills that are necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse and respond critically to literary texts from Canada and other countries; interpret a variety of informational and media texts; create texts in a variety of forms for school-related and practical purposes; and consolidate skills and strategies that contribute to effective oral communication. Important focuses are establishing an appropriate voice for specific purposes and audiences and using language with precision and clarity.

Modules

  • Confronting Issues

    In this unit entitled Confronting Issues, you will apply reading, writing, and oral-visual communication skills to interpret and respond to short stories, poems, and plays that deal with various types of conflicts and issues. You will develop your understanding of such literary elements as character, plot, setting, theme, narrative point of view, and conflict. Furthermore, you will explore the impact of the media as you analyse news reports, articles, and ads. You will create and present a poster on safety and crime prevention and will follow the steps of the writing process to write a script and a narrative text. Finally, you will extend your knowledge of language conventions, focusing on subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and commonly misspelled words.

  • Finding Answers

    In this unit entitled Finding Answers, you will apply speaking, writing, and reading strategies to analyse the elements of conflict, setting, plot, theme, and character of a contemporary mystery novel, Stones by William Bell. You will give your views on various themes or issues in the novel, writing a short essay and making connections with your personal experience and knowledge. You will also develop communication skills relating to your career interests, in preparation for your post-secondary studies and for the workplace. Finally, you will extend your knowledge of language conventions, focusing on capitalization, levels of language, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Making Judgements

    In this unit entitled Making Judgements, you will examine the elements of conflict, setting, plot, theme, and character as you apply various reading strategies to analyse the play Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose. You will apply speaking and writing skills in creative responses, short summaries, persuasive texts, and short-essay answers. You will apply the steps of the research and writing processes to produce and present an evaluative report, assessing sources of information. Finally, you will extend your knowledge of language conventions, focusing on spelling, parallel structure, and sentence combining.

  • Finding Your Place in the World

    In this unit entitled Finding Your Place in the World, you will examine the elements of conflict, setting, plot, theme, and character as you apply speaking, reading, and writing strategies to analyse and respond to a twentieth century novel, Of Mice and Menby John Steinbeck, that recounts the story of two friends in search of success and happiness. You will analyse persuasive texts and will defend your views on various issues in oral presentations and opinion texts of your own.You will further your knowledge of language conventions, focusing on pronouns and sentence structure.
