This course enables students to continue to develop and consolidate the foundational knowledge and skills that they need for reading, writing, and oral and visual communication. Throughout the course, students will continue to enhance their media literacy and critical literacy skills, and to develop and apply transferable skills, including digital literacy. Students will also make connections to their lived experiences and to society and increase their understanding of the importance of language and literacy across the curriculum.

Modules

  • Short and Mighty!

Students begin by exploring the definition of a short story and the key elements that make one effective. They then analyze Borders by Thomas King to examine its themes, characters, plot, setting, and conflicts. Finally, students choose a Canadian short story from a provided list to champion in their final pitch, focusing on how its plot reflects aspects of Canadian identity.

  • Express Yourself!

In this module, students will learn how to actively listen, respond to others’ opinions, and express their own viewpoints in a clear and thoughtful manner. They will explore the influence of digital media and understand how to share ideas and opinions responsibly online.

  • It’s So Dramatic!

Students explore how classic and modern dramatic texts are transformed into different media formats for today’s audiences. They study well-known dramatic works and their adaptations to understand how storytelling changes over time. Then, they create their own adaptation of a dramatic work.

  • Investigate This!

Students engage with various formats—video reports, infographics, in-depth written analyses, podcasts, and audio reports—to examine how information is communicated. Through diverse activities, they strengthen their research, critical thinking, listening, and writing skills, refining their ability to analyze and convey information effectively.

  • Creating Universes With Words

Students explore a range of genre excerpts—including fantasy, mystery, science fiction, and historical fiction—while being introduced to key narrative elements such as plot structure, plot diagrams, plot twists, flashbacks, setting, character development, and atmospheric writing through sensory details. Through these activities, they strengthen their reading and writing skills while developing critical thinking as they analyze texts, make creative choices, and reflect on narrative techniques.
